The fascinating world of tapestries
The large autumn exhibition of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien is dedicated to monumental tapestries.
Commissioned by Pope Leo X, the important painter Raffaello Santi, gen. Raphael (1483-1520) created the famous series depicting the lives and miracles of the apostles Peter and Paul for the Sistine Chapel in Rome. He thus set essential impulses for Flemish tapestry art.
Among the fascinating highlights of the show, in addition to unique works of the Renaissance in "Gold and Silk" include tapestries depicting the seven deadly sins after designs by the important tapestry designer Pieter Coecke van Aelst (1502-1550).
