Waldmüller: Painted from Nature
27 Feb 2026 - 14 Jun 2026
With the exhibition “Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller. Painted after Nature”, the Belvedere dedicates a show to one of the defining Austrian painters of the 19th century, inviting visitors to take a wider view. At its heart are landscapes that not only depict nature, but also convey a longing for light, openness, and stillness that can still be felt today. The exhibition is on view at the Lower Belvedere from 27 February to 14 June 2026.
Waldmüller approached nature with great attentiveness. His paintings of the Vienna Woods, views of the Salzkammergut, and studies of trees and landscapes reveal how closely he observed the world around him and how deeply he was shaped by the direct experience of nature. At the same time, the exhibition places his work in a wider European context and builds connections to artists such as John Constable and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot.
Anyone wishing to discover Vienna not only as a city of music, but also as a city of painting, will find a particularly rewarding museum visit here. A quiet, inspiring excursion for all who love art and would like to encounter spring through images. The Lower Belvedere is located at Rennweg 6, 1030 Vienna, and is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm.
