The MAK presents a major exhibition on Helmut Lang’s vision of design and identity from 1986 to 2005. It highlights the Austrian designer as a pioneer who embraced artistic strategies long before leaving the fashion world in 2005 to focus entirely on art.

With his interdisciplinary approach, Lang broke conventions: fashion, graphic design, architecture, branding, and digital communication merged into a total artwork. In 1998, he made history as the first designer to stream a runway show online – accompanied by 1,000 taxi-top ads that became an icon of New York.

For Lang, fashion was always a cultural narrative. His Séances de Travail and flagship stores in New York and Paris redefined the fashion experience beyond consumption.

The exhibition at the MAK shows how Helmut Lang blurred the boundaries between fashion, art, and society – shaping an entire era.
