Leonardo - Dürer - Renaissance master drawings on coloured ground
7 Mar 2025 - 9 Jun 2025
In spring 2025, the ALBERTINA Museum is presenting an exhibition dedicated to the great masters of drawing. Under the title Leonardo - Dürer. Master Drawings of the Renaissance on a Coloured Ground, outstanding works from this era will be on display. It is the first exhibition under the direction of the new General Director Ralph Gleis and at the same time the first museum presentation dedicated to this topic in its entirety. Particularly noteworthy is the most comprehensive presentation of Leonardo da Vinci in the German-speaking world.
The exhibition takes a new approach to art history: for the first time, the development of drawing in Italy and Northern Europe is analysed in direct comparison. While coloured paper was mainly used for sketches and studies in Italy, drawings north of the Alps were considered works of art in their own right. In German-speaking countries in particular, they were used to depict religious and mythological themes in great detail. With this exhibition, the ALBERTINA Museum sheds light on the different functions and forms of expression of Renaissance drawings and offers a new perspective on the works of Leonardo, Dürer and their contemporaries.
