Belvedere 21 presents a major retrospective of Ashley Hans Scheirl, spanning from the 1970s to the present and featuring new works created especially for the show.
Since the late 1970s, Scheirl has developed a highly diverse oeuvre – from early Super8 films that shaped queer-feminist and transgender counterculture to the experimental cult classics Flaming Ears (1992) and Dandy Dust (1998).
Since the 1990s, painting has taken center stage: abstract expressionism meets photorealism, pop art collides with dark romanticism and surrealism. References range from splatter films and Viennese Actionism to Donna Haraway and Georges Bataille.
With biting humor, Scheirl satirizes neoliberal systems while exploring the social constructions of gender, sexuality and power – showing how multifaceted painting and queer aesthetics can be today.
