Impressionism: Cézanne, Monet, Renoir – Masterpieces from the Villa Langmatt
25 Sep 2025 - 8 Feb 2026
The Lower Belvedere invites visitors to a unique dialogue between art and history: in its baroque halls, masterpieces of French Impressionism unfold – on loan from the remarkable Villa Langmatt collection in Baden, Switzerland.
The Villa Langmatt was not only the residence of Jenny and Sidney Brown but also a place of lived passion for art. From 1907 onward, the Browns began assembling a collection of French art that reflected both their personal taste and the cultural ambitions of Switzerland’s industrial bourgeoisie. The starting point was works by Paul Gauguin, Claude Monet, and Paul Cézanne – the latter represented by an extensive group of paintings.
Particular attention was given to Pierre-Auguste Renoir, whose works remain at the heart of the collection. It is further enriched by outstanding pieces from Camille Corot and other artists who paved the way for Impressionism. The collection thus embodies not only private passion but also the cultural reorientation of an era.
At the Lower Belvedere, this collection now unfolds in all its brilliance: paintings by Cézanne, Monet, Renoir, and their forerunners celebrate the power of light and color, bringing the revolutionary spirit of Impressionism vividly to life.
