Four centuries of fashion, told through colour

How does red signal power. What does black reveal about attitude. And why is white never just white. The exhibition “Farbenspiel. Four Centuries of Fashion” at Wien Museum turns colour into a guiding thread through fashion, society, and belonging. Around 350 garments from the museum’s fashion collection show worn, lived in pieces, from everyday clothing to special ensembles.

The show focuses on classic heraldic colours such as red, white, black, blue, green, and yellow, while also highlighting tones that are often overlooked. Across the centuries, form, colour, motifs, and materials reveal how strongly colour shapes status, emotion, and identity.
