The Technisches Museum Wien opens its new permanent exhibition “Material Worlds”, exploring the fascinating role of materials in our daily lives. They shape our cities, devices, and societies – enabling mobility, communication, and progress. Especially in today’s digital age, which often feels immaterial, it becomes clear: material consumption has never been higher or more complex.

On 3,000 m² and across 13 themed sections, the exhibition highlights the diversity of materials – from concrete, aluminum, and steel to plastics and rare earths. It examines how they are produced, their ecological consequences, and how research and innovation are increasingly focused on sustainability.

A special highlight is the Machine Wall, where visitors can see how forging, welding, milling, casting, and pressing give shape to materials. The bicycle serves as a vivid example: every part, from the frame to the pedal, is the result of a different technique.

Through objects, media, and interactive stations, the Technisches Museum Wien invites visitors to discover in a playful and sensory way what our world is made of – and how materials are closely tied to social change and technological progress.
