Matthew Wong – Vincent van Gogh: Painting as Last Refuge

From February 14 to June 19, 2025, the ALBERTINA presents a remarkable exhibition exploring the artistic dialogue between Chinese-Canadian painter Matthew Wong and the legendary Vincent van Gogh. The New York Times described Wong as “one of the most talented painters of his generation” — profoundly inspired by van Gogh’s iconic works.

Wong’s art moves between Western modernism and Eastern traditions, shaped by both Vincent van Gogh and the Chinese artist Shitao. In just eight years, Wong created an impressive body of work before taking his own life at the age of 35.

The exhibition features approximately 44 paintings and 12 works on paper by Wong, shown alongside selected masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh. This extraordinary exhibition is a collaboration between the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, the Kunsthaus Zürich, and the Matthew Wong Foundation.
